Experiments generally go through or between three different statuses: Draft, In Progress, and Completed. There are also different permissions that are given to the experiment for each of these statuses. Each status can help you know what you can and cannot do within the different stages of your research.

Draft

The Draft status is the initial status of an experiment the moment it gets created. It indicates that an experiment is in the initial blank state and that researchers can start drafting research protocols with procedures. The experiment view page provides a text editing tool within the protocol tab that allows for drafting research details such as procedure steps, tables, images, and more. Experiment assignees can co-edit within the same protocols and collaborate during this stage of the experiment.

In Progress

The In Progress status means that assignees have finished drafting the experiment protocols and that they can now proceed to conduct the research process by completing each step in the protocol procedures. Whoever has access to the experiments needs to change the status of the experiment from Draft to In Progress manually.

Setting an experiment status to In Progress

  1. Once finish drafting the research details and procedures under the Protocol tab of the experiment view page, navigate to the “Start experiment” button at the top right of the page.

  2. Once clicked, a modal will appear to let you know that you cannot edit the protocol content you drafted, but if it is necessary to go back and edit protocols, you will have to set the experiment back to Draft status. Inside the modal, you are also given a couple of choices of what you can do to the protocols you drafted. You can either choose between publishing them or not publishing them at all. Selecting “Publish new protocol” will store the protocol as a template which you can later use in a different experiment.

  3. Click “Confirm” and the status of your experiment will change to In Progress

Completed

The completed status means that the experiment assignees have read through the details of the protocol and completed the procedure that was drafted in the protocols. Whoever has access to the experiment needs to change the status of the experiment from In Progress to Completed manually.

Setting an experiment status to completed

  1. Navigate to the “Complete experiment” button at the top right of the page

  2. Click on the “Complete experiment” button to complete the experiment

  3. Once clicked, you will see a banner at the top of the text editor indicating the date the experiment was completed, and you should also see a notification banner at the bottom left corner that says “Experiment is complete”, which indicated that the experiment is now in Completed status.

Going backward in status

Typically, the status of an experiment goes in the order of DraftIn ProgressCompleted. However, it is still possible to change the status of an experiment backward if necessary.

Setting an experiment status backward

  1. Navigate to the status dropdown at the top right of the page

  2. Click on the dropdown and you will see the different statuses you can set the experiment to.

Note: The status dropdown is only visible when the experiment status is In Progress or Completed.

While setting the status experiment backward is possible by updating it through the status dropdown, setting an experiment status to the next status still goes through the same regular procedure.
